Stonewalling: Not The Best Tactic

A Boston-area currency trading company, Touchpoint Global, Inc., found out recently that stonewalling the Massachusetts Attorney General and the Fair Labor Division might not be such a good idea.

According to an article on the MetroWest Daily News website, the company was ordered to pay more than $49,000 in back wages, along with an additional $10,500 in fines.

The reason for the fines?

Well, apparently the Attorney General’s office received a complaint back in January about workers not getting paid. When they investigated, they requested payroll records (normal during this type of investigation, one would assume), which the company failed to provide. Turns out, that failure was not just annoying for the investigators, it was a violation of state law. Making it a fairly dumb move, on the whole.

I mean, what were they thinking? That the investigators would just throw up their hands and give up if they couldn’t get the payroll records? Sorry, folks, it just doesn’t work that way.

Yep, it’s probably a better idea (and a lot less expensive) to give the investigators what they ask for — especially when the law says you have to.
