Rhode Island Restaurant Hit With Huge Fine

According to this article from The Block Island Times, a popular Rhode Island restaurant, Ballard’s Inn, has been hit with over $200,000 in back wages and a penalty of over $40,000 for allegedly failing to pay its workers properly.

According to the suit, the restaurant failed to pay workers minimum wage and required employees to work more than 40 hours per week without paying overtime. The restaurant has denied the allegations, but agreed without admitting liability to a consent order issued by Judge William Smith in the U.S. District Court for Rhode Island.

The civil penalty of $42,350 represents a pretty expensive lesson. If you think you can’t afford a wage and hour audit, consider if you can afford the alternative…
