TimeKeeping for Project Oriented Firms

Stumbled across this one the other day, and thought it might be interesting for those of you who run project-based businesses (like web design shops, engineering firms, etc.): Project Clock®, a project-based time entry program offering versions for handhelds. According to the CyberMatrix Corporation website, Project Clock Palm runs on handheld computers using PalmOS, while Project Clock CE runs
on Pocket PC computers using Windows CE.
Either one can synch with Project Clock for Windows. Project Clock for Windows comes in either a classic client/server setup or a web interface, where the software is installed on a web server and can be accessed using a web browser.
Project Clock exports directly to QuickBooks and Microsoft Project. You can track your time “on the spot†on your hand-held, synch to your desktop and upload your time to both QuickBooks (for payroll and accounting) and MS Project (for project management), all without re-keying anything. Sounds pretty handy!
If, on the other hand, most of your people are in the office all day and you don’t need the PalmOS or Windows CE capabilities, the company also offers CyberMatrix Timesheets, which also offers exports to QuickBooks and MS Project and offers client/server or web-based versions.
What I like about these for project-oriented businesses is the export to MS Project. Lots of time and attendance software will export to QuickBooks, but also exporting to MS Project is a big potential value-add for a project shop. That’s a lot of re-keying (and potential clerical errors) saved.
I see the company offers 30-day trials of their software. If you or your staff spend a lot of time out of the office and are equipped with either PalmOS or Windows CE devices, Project Clock might be something to look at for recording your time. For in-office project-based firms, CyberMatrix Timesheets looks interesting. I’d say they’re at least worth checking out.
